Question 1: (i) Briefly, what is the issue? What impact does it have on different regions’ GDP, prices, exchange rates and Interest rates? The issue is an unprecedented level of world surplus savings (especially in the Asian economies) that faced with weak investment opportunities serve to fund a growing US current account deficit which creates dangerous world imbalances. The Euro-zone and Japan have slow GDP growth and their savings increase due to a lack of confidence in both financial and social security systems as well as the inability of the private sector to find investments. Also we see increasing fiscal deficits, very low real interest rates and low inflation. The Euro appreciated vs. USD, creating loss of export competitiveness that added up to a weak demand. The yen has been down in real terms (to avoid deflation). Therefore, most of the countries (specially Asia and specifically China) are using this surplus to lend money to the US, thus making the US both borrower and spender of last resort (to finance mainly US consumption, its current account deficit and to some extent its fiscal deficit). Furthermore, any FDIs from Europe and the US into developing Asian economies are recycled (although the Asian countries keep the technology) into Asian Central Banks’ purchase of US Treasuries. The banks also use this as a mechanism to maintain export competitiveness by fixing their currency against the USD, which increases their foreign reserve accumulations. Tight monetary and fiscal policies as well as direct interventions in credit markets have helped to sustain this high domestic savings. China’s economic growth rate is 9%, due to: increasing exports & spending in capital goods and construction; very low interest rates; increasing (but still low) inflation and real exchange rate depreciation. (ii) Why does it put the world economy at high risk? What is the worst possible outcome? The US current account deficit has increased to 6.5% of GDP, because of low and falling savings as well as private spending rising faster than disposable income. The US net external liabilities have also increased to levels that had never been seen before. Thus, in order to achieve a growth of output in line with full employment, US domestic demand needs to grow more than GDP (since imports grow also 6% more than exports). Airwide Case Study

Airwide International is a rapid growing company of commercial and residential air conditioning systems in Europe. The company is broadly broken up into four divisions, one of which is Italy (Western Europe). Italy will be the country that the current dillema will be held in. Airwide shares competition with approximately 75 different manufactures of various air conditioning units. The existence of Asian companies has intensified the competition.Italy is the largest producer of air conditioning units but they are only found in j12 percent of homes. This is significantly low considering the United States has an average of 71 percent in homes. This is a problem that Airwide has been evaluating for some time. Since Airwide would like to increase the percentage of air conditioning units throughout Europe, especially Italy. It came to no surprise that a dealer from Genoa approached the company in hopes to persuade them to sell the units at the higher discount.Giacomo Marino, the dealer, st ated that if he were to purchase the price to distributer for each unit, that his sales would increase sales because the salespeople would get the opportunity to take away business from retailers that sell Asian brands. Airwide International is facing a common problem that most companies of their size go through. Should the dealer maintain title of a dealer but pay the same for the air conditioning unit. This has been an ongoing proposal from Nuova Climatizzazione to Airwide.The dealer would like to be granted the same financial status as a master distributer. Nuova has proven its success in their numbers. They serve approximately 320 accounts located in Genoa. In this proposal, Nuova stated that if they were to receive the higher discount this will increase Airwide sales by 20-25 percent in the next two years. One of the main concerns Airwide has with this proposal is that they have a master distributer in the northern region who believes the dealer will take away their business.Th e dealer has shown that the distributer has done a poor job in development through the region because it is too focused on high margin systems. This would be an issue for Airwide, however the distributer accounts for more than 70 percent of Airwide product sales. Airwide must choose to either give the dealer the higher discount or not. The local dealer would like to decrease in market share and engage in the competitive industry.While the dealer would like to partake in the higher discount, he will have to determine if they will be able to support the minimum $3 million inventory cost. Currently, the dealer has $1. 2 million in sales. He forecasts, with the discount, his sales will increase by 25%. As a result, his overall sales for the year will be $1. 5 million within a two year period. This is half of the inventory minimum. If the dealer would like to be considered for the discount, he will have to show a bu siness plan as to how he will support the initial cost to obtain inventory.The distributer had $9. 7 million in sales of the residential and light commericial units in 2000. An alternative to allowing the local dealer to obtain the higher discount is to do nothing at all. Both parties are contributing well to the company’s success, so like the say, don’t fix what isn’t broken. This may impact the dealer in how they go forward with pushing Airwide business; however the company would not be as impacted on this situation as they would if the distributer were to be upset.The dealer is successful at selling the smaller units and the distributer is successful at selling the larger units since they have the funds for inventory. If Airwide will not give the dealer the higher discount, but they want to challenge him to see if he can gain sales up to 25%. The solution that best fits the company at this time would be to maintain what is currently the process. The dealer ha s not proven that they will be able to financially afford the minimum inventory budget. The distributer has a higher overall selling rate than the dealer.

There are several tree diseases that attack hardwoods trees which can ultimately cause death or devalue a tree in the urban landscape and rural forests, to the point where they need to be cut down. Five of the most malignant diseases have been suggested by foresters and landowners. These diseases are ranked according to their ability to cause aesthetic and commercial damage.   Armillaria Root, the Worst Tree Disease This disease attacks hardwoods and softwoods and kills shrubs, vines, and forbs in every state. It is pervasive in North America, commercially destructive, a major cause of oak decline, and is arguably the worst tree disease. The Armillaria sp. can kill trees that are already weakened by competition, other pests, or climatic factors. The fungi also infect healthy trees, either killing them outright or predisposing them to attacks by other fungi or insects. Oak Wilt Oak wilt, Ceratocystis fagacearum, is a disease that affects oaks (especially red oaks, white oaks, and live oaks). It is one of the most severe tree diseases in the eastern United States, killing thousands of oaks each year in forests and landscapes. The fungus takes advantage of wounded trees, and the wounds promote infection. The fungus can move from tree to tree through roots or by an insect transfer. Once the tree is infected, there is no known cure. Anthracnose, Dangerous Hardwood Diseases Anthracnose diseases of hardwood trees are widespread throughout the Eastern United States. The most common symptom of this group of diseases is dead areas or blotches on the leaves. The diseases are particularly severe on American sycamore, the white oak group, black walnut, and dogwood. The greatest impact of anthracnose is in the urban environment. Reduction of property values results from the decline or death of shade trees. Dutch Elm Disease Dutch elm disease primarily affects American and European species of elm. DED is a major disease problem throughout the range of elm in the United States. The economic loss resulting from the death of high-value urban trees is considered by many to be devastating. Fungus infection results in clogging of vascular tissues, preventing water movement to the crown and causing visual symptoms as the tree wilts and dies. American elm is highly susceptible. American Chestnut Blight The chestnut blight fungus has virtually eliminated the American chestnut as a commercial species from eastern hardwood forests. You only now see the chestnut as a sprout, as the fungus eventually kills every tree within the natural range. There is no effective control for chestnut blight even after decades of massive research. The loss of American Chestnut to this blight is one of forestrys saddest stories.

The middle passage portrays the Europeans efforts to divide African cultures by separating the slaves so that they were amongst those that spoke different languages and therefore could not communicate with them. Amistad illustrates the result of not separating the Africans and attempting to â€Å"conquer† them without stripping them of the ability to communicate with one another. Without instituting the process of â€Å"cultural division† (and eventual extinction) resulting from the â€Å"middle passage†, efforts to conquer the African people were worthless. High and Late Renaissance Period Essay In chapter 22, we cover the High and Late Renaissance within the time period of the 1495 through the 1600’s. Which really included some of the most famous artists and paintings still known to man today. The artists that are still most famous today for their work done back then are Leonardo, Raphael, Donatello and Michelangelo. Other artists and notables we learned about in this chapter include Titian, Palladio, Vasari, Tintoretto, Veronese, Bronzino, Parmigianino and Sofonisba Anguissola. Let’s start from the period 1495. Leonardo da Vinci, also known as â€Å"The Renaissance Man. He wasn’t just an artist he was infatuated with learning. His curiosity is noted in his sketchbooks dealing with subjects of geology, zoology, anatomy, hydraulics, mechanics and so much more. Leonardo states himself that his scientific investigations made him a better painter. Leonardo believed in reality in an absolute sense is inaccessible and humans can know it only through its changing images. This making sense because he also believed that the eyes, were the most important organs with sight being the more essential function. With eyes, individuals can grasp reality most directly and profoundly. Leonardo’s most recognized paintings in this era were Madonna of the Rocks, Madonna and Child with Saint Anne and the Infant Saint John, Vitruvian Man, Last Supper and the Mona Lisa. From the Madonna of the Rocks painting, Leonardo, presented the figures in a pyramidal grouping where they also share the same environment. This created a unified atmospheric setting that was taught by his scientific curiosity that created a new medium of oil painting. His robust style is shown in the Last Supper as well as the Mona Lisa, which is arguably the most famous painting in the world. Using chiaroscuro and atmospheric perspective in most of his art work this portrait is a prime example of sfumato (misty-haziness). The Mona Lisa has received tons of attention because of many reasons. One, being the controversy of who is actually in the painting and two, the fact that the woman is looking directly at the viewer. This is something this time period is not used to seeing, especially a secular painting. A painter strongly influenced by Perugino, Leonardo and others was Raphael. Raphael was sent to work by Julius II. Raphael’s style was all about foreshortening and of the perspective system he learned from Perugino. Some of Raphael’s greatest works included, Madonna in the Meadow, Marriage of the Virgin, Philosophy (School of Athens), Pope Leo X with Cardinals Giulio de’ Medici and Luigi de’ Rossi, Baldassare Castiglione and Galatea. Raphael painted so many things under the Pope and the Medici family, which brought him much success in his life. Raphael’s paintings were much brighter and bolder than Leonardo’s which I enjoy the intense detail of his paintings. His figures communicate moods that reflect their beliefs, and the artist’s placement of the figures tied these moods together. It is shown best in his painting of Philosophy, School of Athens. One of my favorites from Raphael is Galatea. Instead of showing more biblical paintings this one was representing classical mythology. Which was rarely used to make paintings for. Michelangelo was an artist, architect, poet, engineer and a sculptor. Although, he is most famous for painting the Sistine chapel frescos, his sculpting was very prominent and shares the divine power to â€Å"make man. One great artist that began the High-Renaissance painting style in Venice was Giovanni Bellini. Influenced greatly by Antonello da Messina, a Sicilian born painter. He encountered Flemish painting and mastered using mixed oil. As a result Bellini used a mixture of oil and tempera and created a sensual coloristic manner that dominated for the rest of the century. Known for his Madonna paintings and others he used his style to teach other great artists like Titian and Giorgione. Giorgione, although short-lived he created The Tempest, which focused on lyrical and sensual inspired poetry to be conveyed in his paintings. Among Bellini’s death in 1516, the Republic of Venice named Titian as its official painter. Influenced greatly by Giorgione and his master Bellini, One of his most noted pieces of art was at first believed to be Bellini’s but once known it was Titian he took over the Venetian painting style. He was a colorist and a master of the oil medium that casted a mood of tranquil and dreaminess over the entire painting. Some of his art work included: Pastoral Symphony, Assumption of the Virgin, Madonna of the Pesaro Family, Meeting of Bacchus and Ariadne, Isabella d’Este and Venus of Urbino. Titan’s late work was brought on by him thinking of his death and started creating a memorial for his tomb, like Michelangelo, called Pieta. During this time canvas’s very being introduced and it was painted on a canvas creating a thick Impasto. In the 1520’s emerged Mannerism. Where paintings were know centered on style and representation. Mannerism revealed itself to have imbalanced compositions and unusual complexities. Showing random space and unusual presentations of traditional themes. The artists in this style era included: Pontormo, Parmigianino, Bronzino and Sofonisba Anguissola. The most noted out of all of these artists would have to be Parmigianino. He began a painter in his teens and quickly became the favorite painter in Rome. His works include the self-portrait in a convex mirror and his best work Madonna with the Long Neck. Displaying elegance in the mannerist fashion and Madonna with a distorted long neck. Bronzino also conveyed the mannerist style very well in his controversial painting of Venus, Cupid, Folly and Time. The meaning of the painting was overall ambiguous and was left with the viewer to decide what happens. The first female in this chapter that is actually noted for her talents is Sofonisba Anguissola. She introduced a new kind of group portrait where the subjects are often engaged in activities causing an informality in the painting but still leaving the charm for people to see. The style switches up again in the 16th century combining the High Renaissance Venetian ideas but also incorporating many elements in the mannerist style.
